Revival of progressive thoughts must to end social conflict: speakers

#KARACHI: Revival of progressive and #secular thought can only bring the society out of current deep-rooted socio-political conflict, said speakers on the 98th birth anniversary of eminent #Marxist #scholar, #journalist and #activist #Syed Sibte Hasan on Saturday.

Prof Syed Jafar Ahmed Director of Pakistan Study Centre at University of Karachi said, “Work of Sibte Hasan shows us Urdu literature at his time was so rich which directly addressed the social issues.” His translator work was a great part of Urdu literature, he added. 

He said that along with Ali Abbas Jalalpuri, Ahmed But and Dr Mubarak Ali the role of Sibte Hasan was most eminent in spreading progressive thought. Sibte Hasan had groomed in the company of great personalities like Qazi Abdul Gafar and Rashed Jahan. Sibte Hasan had acknowledged in his life that among the persons who influenced his life were Asmath Chugthai, Rashed Jahan and his mother.

He said Sibte Hasan was so dedicated with his work that he would never skip any content on the topic of freedom and progressive thinking. After his death five books were published including Sukan-dar-Sukan, which was almost completed in his life while three more books were still in progress to get publish.

He elaborated the prominent work of Hasan including Mazi Kay Mazar in which he criticised the thought process of the society, which was based on the inherited concepts and another book Naveed-e-Fiqr, which was written on the time when the country was turning politically religious.

The work of Hasan on Iranian revolution was considered as a standard piece on the topic, which studies the structure and the contradiction of the Iranian society of the time along with the role of working class in overthrowing rule of Shah dictatorship. He called the post Shah Iranian system as Ayaothocrasy (The rule of Ayathullah Khumaini) instead of Theocracy.

Prof Sahar Ansari said Sibte Hasan was the scholar who quoted many of the poetry of Alama Dr Iqbal which favoured the progressive thinking and had great ability to extract thought from the writing written in opposition to make them source of enlightenment in the society, he added.

President of Forum for Secular Pakistan Dr Haroon Ahmed presented the archives in which Sibte Hasan was expressing his view. He says, “Culture and the thought system were not separate things they both generate each other, those who live differently will also have a different course of living, feeling and thinking.” International Youth and Workers Movement arranged the event.
